Part 4 - USB - Unhiding Files
Before we start copying files onto your USB flash drives, we need to change some settings on the computer that you're making these tools on.
Here, I'll be providing instructions on how to unhide certain files for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. All of the things to change listed below apply to XP, Vista and 7, unless otherwise noted. If you are using a Mac to download/make these tools, then you can skip this particular page.
- Click Start
- Click Control Panel
- In Windows XP double click Folder Options or click on Appearance and Themes and then click on Folder Options
- In Windows Vista double click on Folder Options or click on Appearance and Personalization and then click on Folder Options
- In Windows 7 double click on Folder Options or click on Appearance and Personalization and then click on Folder Options
- Select the View tab at the top of the new window
- Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders
- Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) checkbox
- Click Yes on the warning dialog that pops up
- Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types checkbox
- In Windows 7 only: Uncheck the Hide empty drives in the Computer folder checkbox
- Click Apply
